Forage with us in West Sweden this autumn

We’re planning to run a weekend foray based on our home island of Orust in West Sweden, where landscapes are beautiful and peaceful, and picking conditions ideal for finding a good variety and quantity of wild edible mushrooms, later this year. We have talked a lot about how lovely it is on our Derbyshire forays, and many people have asked over the years about coming over to Sweden. Now there is an opportunity to share this fantastic experience with us!

Dates: Fri 9 – Mon 12 October 2020

Price: £180 which includes 2 full days of forays on the Saturday and Sunday, one evening meal including wild mushrooms, plus some dried mushrooms to take home with you. Flights, accommodation, breakfast, lunches, other evening meals and transport to and from the accommodation/forays are not included. If you want to make the foray part of an extended trip, extra nights can be booked at our accommodation. Please contact us to arrange that.

Accommodation: Our summerhouse on Orust is in fact two fully furnished houses on the same plot of land, and there are a limited number of beds in the Grey House house which is next to the Red House, where we live when we are in Sweden. The Grey House has a king size double bedroom and a triple bedroom, plus a double sofa bed downstairs. These can be hired on a self catering basis for those dates (or longer if wanted). Price per night for the double room is £80 and for the triple room £90. The sofa bed is £20 per night. Shared facilities (shower room/toilet/washing machine; kitchen diner/lounge). Bedding and towels are included in the price. You can see details of the accommodation (NB: the Grey House only, as we will be staying in the Red House) here: https://www.stugknuten.com/stugaeng.asp?stugid=7346. We can also provide details of other self catering or hotel accommodation in the area on request.

Travel: to Gothenburg. If you are flying, Ryanair for example flies to Landvetter airport from Manchester, Edinburgh and Stansted. The island of Orust where we are based is approximately 1.5 hours away. It’s possible to travel to our property on public transport, and we are happy to provide more information about how, but we do recommend hiring a car as the quickest and easiest way to reach us, and can also provide details of a company we use regularly if required.

The maximum number of participants we will take will be 12 and to run the event we will need a minimum of 6.
If you are interested get in touch by email or give us a call on the mobile numbers listed on the contact page.

Welcome to another stockist in Derbyshire, the Hartington Cheese Co.

Our list of stockists in Derbyshire is expanding all the time! We’re delighted to now also be selling at the wonderful Hartington Cheese Co. at Cromford Mills in the heart of the Derbyshire Dales.

The shop stocks all their fabulous cheeses as well as other deli products, and there’s a visitor centre, other shops, exhibitions about mill owner Richard Arkwright and walks to do at the centre itself, which is part of the Derwent Valley                                                 Mills UNESCO world heritage site. It’s a great day out!

Tasting: Saturday 28 September at Croots Farm Shop

This Saturday 28 September, we’ll be doing a tasting at our new stockist, Croots Farm Shop & Cafe in Duffield, south Derbyshire. We’ll be there from 10.30 – 1.30, with wild mushroom products for you to try, and helpful recipe cards to take away. It’s one of the biggest farm shops in the area, with an in house butchery and bakery, as well as a deli and cafe, so well worth a visit!

You can also now find our details as well as many other fine food producers and retailers, including Croots Farm Shop, on a helpful new website, Artisan Directory.

Come on a funghi foray in the Peak District with us!

Autumn is coming, and maybe it’s of some comfort to know that all the rain we’ve had this summer ought to lead to a good mushroom season!

We still have a few places left on our popular Peak District forays in Hayfield, on Sunday September 15.

The emphasis is on having fun and learning some useful tips on how to recognise the many tasty edible funghi that can be found once you know what to look out for. By the end of the walk you should have a good grounding in at least one of the families of beginners mushrooms, like boletus and other ceps, as well as basic knowledge in how to spot the nasties.

The walk ends with lunch al fresco, where we fry up some of the mushrooms we have picked to enjoy with tasty sausages and bread, hot and cold drinks and home made carrot cake. If the weather is inclement you don’t need to worry about getting wetter while you eat, there will be gazebos to shelter under. You’ll find full details on our UK forays page. Drop us an email to book or for more details.

Events this June

We’re delighted to be back at the FAB market in Whaley Bridge Canal Basin this Saturday 15 June from 9-2, alongside our Dark Peak Foods partners The Old Cow Shed Chisworth, and lots of other food and art producers.

Come along and have a taste of wild mushrooms in one of our popular recipes, either soup or on toasties, and pick up some inspiring recipe cards.

As well as 15g packets we’ll be selling Porcini and Winter Chanterelle loose, so save money on packaging and bring your own airtight containers!

Hello to our new stockist in Bakewell, Derbyshire.

We’re delighted to welcome another lovely cafe/deli to the Get Funghi family.

The Lambton Larder opened recently on Buxton Rd in the busy market town of Bakewell. It stocks a small but well chosen range of ambient and fresh deli products, and serves tasty food and drinks at lunchtime. We wish them all the best for their new venture!

Planning a tasting there in April, details to follow soon.

Fancy foraging in West Sweden with us?

We’re putting out feelers to see if there’s enough interest to arrange a 2 day foraging course in West Sweden this year.

Potential dates are Thursday and Friday 10/11 October or Friday & Saturday 11/12 October.
We’ve chosen those dates as Ryanair will be flying direct on Wednesdays and Sundays to Gothenburg from Manchester starting in April, and flight times are very convenient. At the moment a return flight is around £70.

We are setting a limit of 12 people on the forays which will take place on both days. We’ll go out into the forest all day, taking a packed lunch with us, then have a fry up of mushrooms when we get back to base, which is our property on the island of Orust, about 1 hour 30 mins from Gothenburg.

If we get enough interest to go ahead the price will be £90 per foray which will include a whole day out in the deep unspoilt forests of West Sweden, a grilled sausages/mushroom fry up afterwards, plus lots of practical tips about drying, pickling or cooking with wild mushrooms. Participants will be able to take home some of their own dried mushrooms!

We have many suggestions for hotel or self catering accommodation nearby, including a separate fully furnished house on our property with a double and a triple bedroom, that can be hired per room if you don’t mind sharing the house with others, or the whole house if you have friends who might be interested in foraging in Sweden too. If you are interested in that option we can email more information to you.

Accommodation at our house will be self catering, and price per room per night is £50. Shared use of kitchen and bathroom.

If you want to stay longer and use the property as a base to explore more of the area that option is also available.

Get in touch by email, phone or pigeon post if you’re interested!
